Quotes from the podium finishers in Race 1

19 October 2024

Mikel Azcona (winner): “At the start, when I saw the rain drops, I thought that was the only chance for us. In the dry the maximum I was capable of was P4, so I was happy when I saw the rain come. Straight away I was feeling really good. I calculated... 16 laps to go, my pace is really good, I can win. So, I tried not to make any mistakes and find the good lines, because for me it was the most challenging race I have ever done, with the slick tyres and the rain. I had to be very careful, because I didn’t want to make mistakes. I love these conditions so I am really happy.”

Esteban Guerrieri (2nd): “I had a good start. Then during the first safety car I said to myself it’s now or never, so I just put it all together and it worked out. I made a very nice lap overtaking to P3. I then went to P2 with a really good pace. I had a very good feeling. I tried to do a good job with the least mistakes possible and that was achieved. I really enjoyed it. Congratulations to the guys again.”

Thed Bjork (3rd): “The first thing I did was a fantastic lap in qualifying. I didn’t expect to be in P2. It was a great with the weight that I had. Then I had a good start from P2 and Santi (Urrutia) let me pass without fighting. It was raining from the beginning so it was hard for everybody to get the correct tyres. When it started to rain more after the second safety car, I didnt have the pace that Mikel and Esteban had. I tried to drive as fast as I could but I couldn’t fight them, so I just tried not to make mistakes. I am happy with 3rd position.”

Jason Zhang Zhi Qiang (1st in TCR China): “It’s been tough for us to get used to the new tyres, though I’ve got lots of experience racing at Zhuzhou, more than the TCR World Tour drivers, but they know the tyres better than us. During the race I just tried to avoid all the incidents and keep the car on the track. At the end my lap times were really good, but unfortunately the race was too short with two safety cars. If it was a little bit longer, maybe I could have made up some more places.”
