Rob Huff makes up nine places to secure sixth place finish in Macau Race 1

Rob Huff managed to make up nine spots in the first of the races at the Macau Guia Race in his Volcano Motorsport, coming out of the incident at the exit of Lisboa relatively unscathed and was able to catch and chase down the Hyundai of Néstor Girolami to the finish.

The British driver managed to make a good start, despite narrowly missing the stalled car of Ma Qing Hua which was stopped on circuit on Huff’s side of the grid.

Huff was then almost caught up in the pile-up at San Francisco, clipping the rear of Marco Butti’s Honda as it made contact with team-mate Esteban Guerrieri, who was rejoining the racing line after running wide at Lisboa.

“I got a good start, and managed to miss Ma by a paper’s width, “said Huff. “It was a bit of a shock to see him not going anywhere, but luckily I’d had a good start and the guys next to me hadn’t so I knew I had the space to duck out. I managed to get about seven places by the time I got to Lisboa, got a good run around the outside at Turn 1, got a couple on the way to Mandarin and a couple more at the exit.

Then into Lisboa I saw Yann (Ehrlacher) and Guerrieri had gone very deep, I was behind Butti, andn we both took it easy and went down the inside, but we didn’t expect them to come back side-by-side and there’s no way two of you can come back onto the line. I threw the car to the left and the front right just caught Butti but I managed to squeeze through.”

Huff’s car was able to make the restart, in which he recovered the positions he’d lost after the restart order was set as per the first sector, and managed to finish the race in sixth, nine places ahead of where he’d started.

“I managed to have a good race after the restart and had a really good run to sixth,” he added. “I tried to put Néstor under as much pressure as possible, but obviously Macau is Macau, and as long as you’re quick on the straight, as the Hyundais are, you’ve got it covered.

“We’ve got a good car, and we can improve it a bit more for tomorrow. We were unlucky yesterday, and we got a bit lucky today - to gain nine places at Macau is pretty impressive. The team delivered a really good car, it’s just a shame we didn’t get a chance to qualify where we should have done yesterday, as we definitely had a top five car.”
